The New Mission Field

The mission fields of the world are changing! It is no longer necessarily going to the end of the earth to engage in cross-cultural missions. The new mission field is here, now, in the cities, and Derby is one of them.

Derby, a small city in the middle of England, boasts a population of more than 180 different nationalities with over 17 different recognized spoken languages. In fact, more than 17% of the city’s population was born outside of the United Kingdom, making Derby an ideal cross-cultural outreach location; especially for those wanting to work with Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Eastern Europeans as well as refugees, homeless and youth workers, and many more ministry opportunities available. Youth With A Mission has been in the city of Derby for over 25 years.

We believe that the time of spiritual tourism is over, and our goal is to provide life-changing outreach opportunities not just for the trainees but also for those they minister to. We are looking for outreach teams that would like to be involved in building long-lasting ministries here in the city.

Unlike the traditional YWAM base focused on training, like a DTS or second-level schools, here in YWAM Derby, we are committed to supporting the local church and the many different ministries operating within the city. We believe God has called us to support those called to training in YWAM, by offering meaningful life-changing outreach opportunities.

The New Mission Field

We are community

Our community is made up of many different nationalities. We are families and singles, some living on base and some living in the community. We meet weekly for worship and intercession, which we encourage your team to join in. Each team member works alongside local churches and different ministries in the city. We are a close-knit team supporting each other in the many different types of ministries and projects.

Accommodation

We have several different types of accommodation available, depending on the needs of your team. Most rooms have toilets and showers, bedding is provided

Transport

Once in Derby you will find travel around the city easily. The base is within walking distance of most ministry opportunities, as well as the train and bus station. Within Derby, the bus system is excellent, operating from early morning to late at night. The bus system also covers much of the Derbyshire countryside and small villages as well as easy passage to the City of Nottingham, which is about 25 minutes away. The city also has a large number of reasonably priced taxis and Uber.

Day off

There are several parks to enjoy within easy walking distance of the YWAM base, most with basketball and tennis courts along with jogging paths. For a very English experience, we suggest Chatsworth House. Home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and made famous by Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice as well as the movie by the same name. It is an easy journey and makes an excellent must-see English adventure. London is an easy 3-hour train journey away. You will have no trouble finding something to do on your days off. There is also a new sports village with a water park not far from the base.
